Paris Sciences & Lettres University (PSL), officially known as Université PSL, is a prestigious research university located in the capital of France, Paris.
PSL traces its origins back to the University of Paris, established in 1200, and was later reorganized and consolidated in 2010. In 1968, the University of Paris was split into 13 independent universities (Paris 1 to Paris 13). PSL inherited the legacy of Paris 9 University, along with École Normale Supérieure, Mines ParisTech, and other prestigious institutions, bringing together 24 historic schools and research institutes in Paris. The university holds high academic prestige in various fields, including engineering, literature, science, economics, and medicine, with the ambition to become the top university in France and continental Europe.
As of August 2017, PSL has educated 3 French presidents and 1 Senegalese president. Among its alumni, faculty, and researchers, 33 Nobel Prize winners, 14 Fields Medalists, 38 César Award winners, and 71 Molière Award winners have emerged.
In the 2025 QS World University Rankings, PSL is ranked TOP 24 globally, making it the highest-ranked French university. In the 2024 QS Mathematics Rankings, PSL is ranked 13th worldwide. Additionally, in the 2022-2023 CWUR (Center for World University Rankings), PSL was ranked 19th in the world and 1st in France.
